A Power of Attorney
is a document that gives someone else the legal authority to do certain things for you. That person is called the attorney-in-fact
or agent. Your agent does not need to be a lawyer. There are different types of powers of attorney. For example,
a medical power of attorney is a type of power of attorney but is only for health care.
Advance
Directives are documents that communicate your wishes about medical care if, at some point in the future, you are
unable to speak for yourself. Three of the Texas Advance Directive documents are set out in Chapter 166 of the Health &
Safety Code:
Medical Power of Attorney
Directive to Physicians
and Family or Surrogates ("living will")
Declaration of Guardianship
